The culinary focus here lies in classic Vietnamese staples carefully reimagined as vegetarian delights. Their menu boasts a broad selection of dishes, with standout favorites like the Bun Rieu ⓥ ⓜ—a tomato-based noodle soup topped with veggie meats that’s both rich and refreshingly light—and the 18 Bun Bi Cha Gho, a vermicelli bowl generously layered with two spring rolls, crisp lettuce, and an addictive vegan fish sauce that keeps guests coming back for more.
Equally irresistible are their spring rolls, especially praised for featuring an ample amount of fresh mint—a detail that elevates the freshness and balances the flavors beautifully. This generous mint accompaniment caught the attention of repeat customers who note that, unlike many places where mint is just a token garnish, Thien Tam serves it in hearty portions, enhancing every bite with its bright herbal note.
For those who crave warm, comforting rice dishes, options like the Com Ga Hai Nam—Hai Nam (Hainan) rice paired with veggie chicken—and Com Bi Nem Nuong, featuring shredded tofu and veggie grilled ham served with vegan fish sauce, showcase the kitchen’s mastery in balancing textures and bold, nuanced flavors. The pan-fried noodle dishes, such as the Pho Xao Thap Cam Co Xot ⓥ ⓜ, bring a pleasing combination of crunchy edges and tender veggie meats bathed in a complex spicy sauce, satisfying adventurous palates.
Many diners appreciate the authentic taste and variety on the menu, highlighting dishes like Banh Xeo ⓥ ⓜ, the savory Vietnamese crepes brimming with fresh ingredients and veggie meat, and the Goi Ngo Sen DAC Biet ⓥ ⓟ, a refreshing lotus stem salad packed with complementary textures and flavors. It’s clear the kitchen puts great care into crafting each plate, delivering robust flavors without relying on animal-based ingredients.
One cannot overlook the attentive service. Guests frequently mention the staff’s warmth and willingness to guide newcomers through the menu, ensuring everyone finds something that perfectly suits their taste and dietary needs. The pricing is another highlight—affordable and generous portions make Thien Tam a standout value in the competitive Los Angeles vegetarian dining scene.
While some dishes featuring gravy don’t resonate equally with all guests, the overall experience is overwhelmingly positive, with many vowing to return and explore further. It’s this blend of authentic flavors, fresh ingredients, and a genuine passion for vegetarian Vietnamese cooking that sets Thien Tam Vegetarian Restaurant apart. Whether you’re a longtime vegetarian or simply seeking a flavorful, wholesome meal, this inviting corner of El Monte promises a satisfying and memorable culinary journey.
First this is Vietnamese vegetarian. We had the spring roll appetizer with veggie shrimp. One of the best if not the best spring roll I have had in a restaurant. When we do spring rolls at home, we set out a variety of meats, tofu, veggies and lots of fresh mints. Our whole family loves extra mint and these rolls had plenty where most places put literally only a couple of leaves. We had wide noodles with veggies and veggie meats, and the veggie soup with vermicelli pork belly and other soy meats, served pho style with mints, bean sprouts, shredded cabbage. jalapeños. etc. Both dishes were as good or better than other places serving meat. Purchased some vegan spicy flavored soybean Jerry to go. We will definitely be back! Note closed Tuesday and Wednesday.
This restaurant is located in a small plaza with limited parking space. Overall the food was ok. We just happened to ordered the wrong one that we were not thrilled about. I had #18 which was supposed to be a vegan version of #19 but instead of having the fake meat, they gave me spring roll. I thought that had egg in it, no?! Anyway....disregard, I had it. The other one is #15 which was a popular item on the menu. Yet it has too much rice noodles. Not as spicy as we expected. It's still pretty flavorful tho. I don't love this place but think it is pretty okay and decent.
One of the best vegetarian restaurant in my opinion. The restaurant kinda small but cozy vibe. Nice friendly staff was a plus. Love the tasty food and their good price for quality. Bun Bo chay here is a Must!!
Tons of vegan options, tasty Vietnamese fare, and the kind of authentic experience you want. Not to mention, the prices are fantastic, especially for LA. While we didn’t love every dish we ordered (learned we didn’t like the ‘gravy’ dishes very much), and it hasn’t replaced our other favorite options in Whittier and Van Nuys, still a good spot. We need to come back again to give it a second try.
Amazing quality & fresh VEGAN food! #18 is the vermicelli bowl w/2 spring rolls - which has chopped lettuce underneath the rice noodles (so it looks like a lot. FYI, getting extra food in a Chinese restaurant is awesome & a blessing!!!) This dish was served with vegan fish sauce! (*I tried asking for the secret recipe & was denied ). My mom wanted the tomato-based soup w/noodles, which was delightful! I really like the house-made tofu because they tasted like fish cakes! We had spring rolls w/peanut sauce (because we requested to it instead of fish sauce) and that was light & flavorful too. I ordered the #6 which the pan fried thick rice noodles w/veggies - this has been my favorite! (Sorry I didn’t include a pic…I ate it too quickly!) Overall, the staff is friendly & knowledgeable of vegan food. I think the prices are very good for unique, tasty, & fresh VEGAN food! I would come back again
This remains one of my husband's favorite restaurants he's ever been to (mostly based on the menu selections). We had moved away and came back to visit family and made sure to visit this restaurant too. I had #22 or 24 (can't remember which, the one with lemongrass), he had #17. The chicken was very flavourful! We had our toddler with us and were surprised the restaurant didn't have booster seats. It wasn't a big deal for us, we usually keep one in the car just in case. The dining room can feel cramped during lunch and dinner rush, but if you're looking for a quick place to eat with many vegetarian options, this is a good spot!
This is a small family run business in a strip mall, nice and clean. Tasty in flavor, big in portion, very reasonable in price. Orders come out fast regardless it is the busy lunch hours. Recommended items: all soup noodles item, plus # 9, 19, and 23.
There's no razzle-dazzle here, but they put all their love into the food. I shared three dishes with my friend, and all of them were excellent, but the tomato noodle soup was my favorite. A lot of the items on the menu are low fodmap, too. Looking forward to my next visit already!
